How this page was made
Where the stories come from
- Each story was researched from sources you can open: the 1883 Bombay Gazetteer for Kanara, the Karnataka State Gazetteer, Census of India tables, government and Navy pages, and newspapers.
- Every story card names its main source and says how sure we are: from old records, from books and news reports, or what people say.
- Photos come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences. The photographer and licence sit under each one.
Where the numbers come from
- Rain: the Karwar rain gauge (NOAA GHCN Daily) and the GPCC estimate for the area.
- Sea warmth: NOAA ERSST, Met Office HadISST and NOAA OISST, for the sea off Karwar.
- Sea level: tide gauges from PSMSL. The Karwar gauge was reset in 2009, so its trend is not quoted.
- Storms: every cyclone track in NOAA IBTrACS that came within 300 km of Karwar town centre.
How it was built
- Research and drafting were done with Claude Code agents, one per chapter, under a written brief: every fact needs a source that was actually opened, and nothing is invented.
- A script checks every chapter before it goes live: sources exist, photos have credits, no stock phrases.
- The page is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with no tracking. It works on cheap phones and slow connections.
- Share links and picture cards are made by a script, so every story has its own preview picture in WhatsApp and Instagram.
- The Kannada, Konkani and Marathi text is machine translated and waiting for native speakers to check it.
